It was US tenor man Brew Moore who famously stated, “Anybody who doesn’t play like Pres [Lester Young] is wrong” – and that said, set out to play like his idol. Only he didn’t… well, not exactly. On this hugely pleasing 1961 showing, his playing was certainly Pres-like, but at one remove, much in the same way as that other great Lesterian, Stan Getz.

The flow of ideas marks Moore out, his unhurried phrasing and seemingly endless ability to invent coherent variations on standard tunes and bebop staples like ‘Yardbird Suite’, clearly out of the top drawer. And he swings superbly. His reading of ‘I Want To Be Happy’ played at a headlong tempo, is right up to Getz-ian standards, much helped by the purposeful playing of the then 15-year old bass prodigy, NHØP!

The lesser-known Goldberg was from Boston, moved to Copenhagen and became co-owner of the famed Montmartre club, and accompanies Moore on both these sets, salvaged from radio and TV archives in Denmark and Sweden respectively. His piano work is boppish but precise, sounding like a distillation of Bud Powell and Al Haig. Anyway, he fits Moore perfectly. He plays alto horn on a single track, trading fours with Moore and articulating much like Brookmeyer on valve trombone.

Sadly, despite Moore’s obvious prowess, his star never quite shone as it should have. Having scratched around in the States, alcohol derailed him, but he found a safe haven in Copenhagen and just back from a US visit, fell to his death from a restaurant staircase in 1973. He was just 49.
