This ambitious 3CD set gathers together the previously unreleased recordings of New York-based spiritual jazz player Brother Ah (aka Robert Northern). Originally born in Kinston, North Carolina, music teacher Northern was baptised Brother Ah by his class of students, who would all say, “AHH! AHH” when he walked into the classroom with his instruments. An Egyptian student later told Northern that Ra is the name of the sun, while Ah is the name of the moon, and so he adopted the moniker of Brother Ah. The recordings that make up Divine Music are obviously inspired by Sun Ra, who Brother Ah played trumpet for at Slug's jazz club on the Lower East side of New York, as part of his Arkestra. Despite being composed in an urban environment, the music on all three discs (titled The Sea, Meditation and Divine Music respectively) resonates with a sense of natural and cosmic energy, with Brother Ah's hypnotic flute and trumpet being the dominant instruments. Elsewhere nature sounds and conch-shell blowing bring a sense of exotica to the pieces – some of which wouldn't sound out of place on a Yma Sumac album.
