It’s almost a given in contemporary jazz that if you have a name and background of a particular ethnic group then your music will be considered as representative of it in some way. But the thirtysomething pianist Burak Bedikyan, who is of a minority Turkish-Armenian heritage, only hints at these possibilities in his music. His Christian background in a predominantly Muslim country might have taken him further towards the musical culture of the West and he leads a classy straightahead session here that is touched by the classical music of his background as well as his folk heritage. Through a set of originals, aside from a pretty version of the Beatles’ ‘Here There and Everywhere’, his high quality sidemen don’t let him down. ‘TF’ is for Tommy Flanagan, an influence among other piano giants in the tradition, while there is also a dedication to the fellow Turkish-Armenian writer Hrant Dink, murdered in 2007, and ‘Melancholia’ has the odd metered folk melodies that evoke Bedikyan’s roots. The two-part ‘Prayer for Forgiveness’ comes as something of a surprise with both Potter and Bedikyan frantically conversing in a contemporary atonal classical vein.
