Burak Bedikyan is a Turkish jazz pianist who pledges allegiance to the bebop masters from Bud Powell through to the eloquence of Tommy Flanagan. A YouTube video of ‘Tribute to Bud Powell’ from 2013, recorded at the Nardis Jazz Club in Istanbul, reveals a far more outgoing pianist – extrovert even – than was suggested by his debut album from the same year, Circle of Life. Here he had a pick-up band with Chris Potter, Peter Washington and Bill Stewart, while on Leap of Faith he rings the changes with another American group – and yes, that's the Ron McClure who played bass in the Charles Lloyd Quartet of the 1960s. He gives rein to his love of bebop on ‘Hommage a Bud et Francis’ that provides a better sense of where this talented pianist comes from, although where he's going remains unclear since on other tracks there's a large dose of ‘thoughtful’ pieces such as ‘Astral Traveller’, ‘Ashes to Ashes’, ‘Leap of Faith’ and more that aren't especially memorable melodically or harmonically, although the band try and make a fist of them – albeit Cheek's tenor playing lacks light and shade, nuance and inflection, a sort of post-Coltrane utility tone that makes you wish this was a trio record.
