Recorded back in 2004 when Caetano Veloso curated a week-long series of concerts at New York's Carnegie Hall, the press release for this new Nonesuch recording gives no inkling as to why it's taken so long for this CD to see the light of day. Featuring both solo songs and duets, there's a delightful interplay between Veloso and cellist Jacques Morelenbaum on tracks such as ‘Coração Vagabundo’ and ‘Manhatã’ (the latter featuring some understated percussion from Mauro Refosco), in which the soaring, legato lines of the cello interlace beautifully with the delicately sprung rhythms of the guitar. On ‘Everyone's in Love with You’ and elsewhere, Byrne's tuning is more than a little wayward, and he sounds distinctly uncomfortable in the song's upper reaches. The audience lap it up, so perhaps you had to be there. Of the duets, ‘(Nothing but) Flowers’ is the standout. But it's the Veloso songs that I'll be returning to.
