At this stage in the game, there's no real need to analyse Cannonball's virtues at any great length to learned Jazzwise readers. However, here's the dilemma, such is the current proliferation of Cannonball reissues that there is much duplication of material. These two public domain releases are no exception. For instance, both these collections include the already widely available Something Else session that Cannonball originally cut with Miles Davis for Blue Note. Then it gets messy: the Avid release also includes the entire 1958's Sharpshooters album while Proper cherry picks just half of the dozen tracks but offers the Live At The Jazz Workshop release whereas Avid settle for just three tracks. Get the picture. Apart from the Miles Davis date, Avid concentrates itself with Quintet dates that include the much-underrated trumpet of brother Nat. The four CD Proper box covers a much wider canvas, scooping up some much earlier sessions taped for Savoy and Emarcy plus a joyous collaboration that Cannonball cut for Riverside with the equally bluesy Milt Jackson. Musically, there's no faulting either Something Else or Riverside-era Adderley, all that's left to say is approach with great caution before handing over the plastic.
