The bottom left hand corner of the CD case of Dahl's Goldberg Variations reads: ‘Genre: Classical’. It became Denmark's best-selling classical album within just two months of release in 2014, selling 2,000 vinyl copies and 6,000 CDs during that period. The Tiger label, which is part of the Danish retail chain Tiger, put out the vinyl copies at £5 and the CDs for £3, which may go some way to explain the album's popularity, but it also topped the Danish iTunes Classical chart and the iTunes Pop chart, which is not so easy to explain. Dahl uses a ‘prepared piano,’ whereby the metal wires that comprise the ‘snare’ bit of a snare drum are laid over the piano strings and make a sound that vaguely resembles a harpsichord, for which instrument the ‘Goldberg Variations’ were written. It creates a sound you think you can live with, but after a while it starts getting on your wick. While Dahl's willingness to experiment with meter and improvisation allowing a little fresh air into the project is laudable, other aspects of his aesthetic are more questionable, such as his reasoning: “I do know that Bach's music is supposed to be beautiful and that's why I had to make it ugly and unpredictable.” Fortunately, he did not entirely succeed in his task.
