This music shows the free and unbuttoned side of Dahl, quite different to his association with Arild Andersen and Patrice Heral that was more revealing of his lyrical intensity. Here he outlines several approaches to the freedom principle, from the Ornette Coleman-ish ‘Sing, Sing Loud’ to episodes where everyone is banging, shaking or vibrating something. Somehow these pieces cohere through the logic of less intense passages giving way to periods of attenuated activity, drift and resolution. For many, this area of jazz communicates better in a live situation than on record. When it is bottled and taken home on a CD, the absence of the visual component somehow conspires to rob the improvisations of their full potential. Even so there are some vibrant – if that is the right word – moments here, with ‘Turkis Butterfl y’ and ‘Nariman's Mood’ among the highlights.
