No revolutions are tried with the organ trio format on Matt Chandler's third album as leader. The guitarist's attractive tone comes via a valve amp, and his skilled trio has no shortage of amiable grooves. The stutter and swing of the organ and drums before Chandler's solo heats up on the self-explanatory, half-time ‘Funk Work’, the flow and dart of ‘The Sting’, the more gently meditative ‘El Diablo’, and the easy lope and almost eerily suspended mood of ‘A Change Of Scene (Of No Scene)’ all subtly vary the formula. The proggy ‘Intricate Façade’ is more shadowy and speculative, effects pedals aiding its gauzy drift. There's nothing to complain about in the diligent craft on display, and nothing to scare the most timorous horse. This is a journeyman's genre workout that may be snapped up at gigs, but is very hard to get excited about. If you just want another satisfactory organ trio album, then here it is.
