Originally only released on CD and cassette back in 1987, this is Thums Up's first appearance on vinyl – and 180-gram yellow vinyl to boot. Chapter Seven was formed by drummer Bengt Berger, a force of nature in Swedish jazz, who has been pushing the envelope since the 1970s – and is still at it now, having recently turned 80.
It's an eye opener if your impression of Nordic jazz is that of quiet, introspective lyricism, especially as this comprises some of Sweden's leading jazz musicians known for just that. The opening track (congrats if you can see the individual tracks in yellow vinyl) is very much tongue-in-cheek, a take-off of a society band along the lines of the Willem Breuker Kollektief in the Netherlands. Chapter Seven broadly follows a similar modus operandi with mid-Eastern pastiche, solo episodes over a pedal point, brass band allusions, fairground oomph episodes, and everything you can imagine to destroy any stereotypical allusions of Nordic jazz. But Breuker was a masterful arranger and got away with it, he had a sense of humour, of structure and form and a brilliant imagination. Here, not so much.
