2006's Time Zones, one of the tenor saxophonist's last notable releases was a solo piano set, and this spirited live album recorded in Poznan, Poland, finds him moving back and forth between both instruments with mixed results. His performance on the horn is solid on reprises of landmark statements by the founding fathers who span the avant-garde and mainstream – Ayler's ‘Ghosts’ and Rollins’ ‘Oleo’ – and in each case the take crackles with a hearty energy and dynamic solos. Having said that, the audio quality is substandard to the extent that Wojcinski and Kugel struggle in a mix that is very flat.
While their comping is adequate the players do not interact sufficiently to really make the music come alive and a rendition of Trane's ‘Giant Steps’, in particular, sadly doesn't go the distance.
Much more satisfying are the piano pieces, in which the lower tempos elicit wry, nuanced responses from the rhythm section, leading in the best case to an imaginative time-stretch of pulse and more melodic playing off the beat from Wojcinski.
It would be a touch draconian to suggest that Gayle choose either horn or keyboard the next time he is on stage or in the studio, but it is hard to escape the feeling that there are two songbooks and two groups struggling to cohere in the same space here. Which is a shame, as the concert is not without interest.
