The last album Mingus played on was an odd mixture, but gained considerable sales success in the heyday of fusion. It was also somewhat schizophrenic, probably thanks to Atlantic's production team of the day. The first two tracks are the same two tunes that opened 1959's Mingus Ah Um, namely ‘Better Git (H)it In Your Soul’ and ‘Goodbye Pork Pie Hat’, but with the horns relegated to also-rans behind the over-the-top playing of Coryell and Catherine, on both solos and lead lines. For some reason ‘Pork Pie’, instead of being in E-flat minor (1959) or E minor (the 1963 re-make as ‘Theme For Lester Young’), starts in F minor, then switches down to E minor, and finally to E-flat minor – go figure. On the other hand, ‘Noddin Ya Head Blues’, arranged like the first two by Jeffrey, and ‘Nobody Knows’, on which Scofield replaces Coryell, are more throwaway, while the long title-track arranged by Mingus is one of his lesser attempts at a multi-section suite. The remakes of the two early hits are definitely worth hearing, though.
