Before Charlie Haden died in July 2014, he was urging Impulse! to release this album, comprising the best performances taken from a four day residency in Japan's Blue Note Jazz Club in Tokyo in March 2005. It's easy to see why he was so keen on it's release, Rubalcaba is an enormously talented pianist who, when you prune away the stunning pyrotechnics, is also a very sensitive and emotionally fulfilling player. He also has a beautiful touch, which enhances this album of slower pieces. ‘En La Orilla Del Mundo’, ‘My One and Only Love’ and ‘Transparence’ are perhaps the highlights on an album that numbers among both musicians best work. Haden knew a thing or two about pianists, and played a leading role in opening doors to Rubalcaba to gain the attention of wider audiences. Although Rubalcaba is not quite the marquee name he perhaps deserves to be, this calm, reflective album is the perfect counter-balance to his more exuberant flights, and indicative of the enormous range of this pianist.
