Jana Herzen and Charnett Moffett's ’Round the World – featuring some great cover versions, including Men at Work's ‘Down Under’ and a song made famous by Kermit the Frog, ‘Rainbow Connection’ – was one of my favourite albums of 2020. Bass virtuoso Moffett returns as sole leader here, though with strong support throughout from Herzen on guitar, and sharing vocals with her on the final tracks.
The second part of the disc is also supplemented in places with the saxophone and flute work of Irwin Hall, but the set begins in sparse-yet-rich trio mode:
Moffett's fretless electric bass is a remarkable lead instrument on tracks such as ‘Higher Dimensions’, in which he and his collaborators indulge in their unique version of harmolodics, ‘a concept that has a precise order that allows artists to play free of keys and to focus on the expression of what they really want to communicate,’ he explains. It's a wonderfully quirky and personal piece of music making, joyous and mystically resonant in equal parts on the likes of closer ‘Rejoice’.
