Four musicians, a pair of duos from Manchester and London, meet up for a series of one-off studio sessions in an attempt to rekindle the fiery passion and poetry that burned in the 1960s New York free jazz movement. These two separate CDs are the result, where saxophone explosions erupt from nowhere, only to be dampened down by somewhat aimless bass and percussion explorations that slowly unwind until the next blast of tenor fury is unleashed. Boundaries are pushed, single entities are assembled and demolished, and instant compositions are bravely tackled, but the quartet seems content to paw over what has already been laid down before. If they don't already realise, free jazz shouldn't be played nostalgically (especially in these dark days), instead it should be wielded as a creative weapon for social and cultural change. Although there is a passion smouldering here (especially on parts of Plastic Knuckle) there is a distinct feeling they are holding back their punches.
