Mis'tah Chet's reputation was instant, first with Gerry Mulligan's quartet and soon after in his own quartet featuring pianist Russ Freeman. What made both quartets such a hit was that most tracks clocked in at under four minutes thus avoiding repetition resulting in the listener becoming bored or distracted. Though here he gets better than average support from his accompanists, very few artists can sustain a person's interest on tracks lasting up to 15min 30 seconds. Chet could rarely meet these criteria, as these six tracks making their umpteenth reappearance demonstrate. Very much in a Miles mood, Chet floats some interesting improvisations for the first few choruses of such selections as Wayne Shorter's ‘Beautiful Black Eyes’ and Michel Legrand's ‘Once Upon A Summertime’, but after that things became erratic, unfocused and rambling. More off putting is the cover photograph, which has all the appeal of a death mask!
