Chris Allard and Ross Stanley first met at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2000, and they have played together many times across the subsequent decades. This album captures them in an intimate duo setting, performing a mixture of standards and Allard compositions with a blend of exacting precision and improvisatory verve.
The comparatively obscure Cole Porter tune ‘Use Your Imagination’ and Peter Bernstein’s ‘Jive Coffee’ are among the well-selected covers; the evocative title track is one of four impressive Allard originals. Stanley is well known as a Hammond organist as well as a pianist but here he limits himself to the latter instrument. Allard and Stanley have performed together in many locations including at the Pyramids in Egypt, and here, perhaps only coincidentally, they essay Walt Weiskopf’s ‘See the Pyramid’, a track that demonstrates the pair’s splendid interplay poised atop the fine line separating chamber classical and jazz modes.
