London-based Chris Hyson studied double bass on a Masters programme at the Royal Academy of Music. But when composing the music for this debut CD, the first in a series of digital-only EPs, he found that only solo piano could honestly convey what he wanted to say. Hyson's choice of pianist is Kit Downes and the opportunity to hear the critically acclaimed pianist playing solo on some good material is a mouthwatering prospect. Among the standout tracks ‘Rainbow’ and ‘Drifter’ cross Keith Jarrett's gospel song affiliations and the worldweary, folky strains of a Tom Waits ballad, while ‘Button Eyes’ owes something to the Beatles’ ‘Martha My Dear’ but stands up well in its own right, reminding us of the influence of Brad Mehldau in Chris Hyson's compositions. There's a subtly imaginative treatment of both themes and harmonies, and it's well recorded. Downes’ touch, composure and attention to detail (as in his creative use of the pedal) bring a warmth and clarity to the performance as well.
