Pianist Ingham has made quite a name for himself by reminding audiences of past glories, be it via his collaborations with Mark Crooks refreshing the Stan Getz or Billy Strayhorn repertoires; or with his tribute to fellow-pianist Dudley Moore’s jazz roots.
Latterly, he’s been mining famed song-writer Hoagy Carmichael’s prolific back catalogue, essentially as a pianist-singer, this second quartet volume continuing the process with Paul Higgs in inventive form as his chief accompanist. Ingham has a nice manner, languid at times, evoking Hoagy’s hipster vocal style if not matching it.
The range of songs – 15 in all - is quite extraordinary; while jazz people will know such gems as ‘Jubilee’ (think Louis’ majestic version) or ‘Rockin’ Chair’ and ‘(Up A) Lazy River’, who remembers ‘Billy-A-Dick’ or ‘Down, Boy’. Well, Ingham does and has been presenting this celebratory package up and down the country with considerable success.
It’s a swingy affair, engaging and often surprising, Ingham happy to turn on the heat pianistically, the arrangements well-tailored and Higgs hot or mellow as required.
Want to hear the Ingham take on such Carmichael classics as ‘Stardust’, ‘Skylark’ and ‘Georgia On My Mind’? Then look out for Hoagy Volume One, also on Downhome.
