The recipient of multiple awards – DownBeat magazine’s Critics Poll Rising Star Big Band, Arranger and Soprano Saxophonist winner, JUNOs for her jazz orchestra recordings Treelines (2011) and Habitat (2014), a Prix Oscar Peterson – Canadian saxophonist and composer Christine Jensen returns with another orchestral release which collects together pieces written across the past decade and more.
These include ‘Fantasy on Blue’, commissioned by the Saskatoon Jazz Festival to mark the 60th anniversary of Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue and giving a starring role to the composer’s sister Ingrid on trumpet. The latter is in fact a key contributor throughout this lushly arranged, richly detailed set of tunes.
Other guests supplementing Jensen’s Montreal-based jazz orchestra include Gary Versace on piano and Chet Doxas on tenor sax. From opener ‘Passing Lions Gate’ through to the closing Miles tribute via various compositions exploring turbulence and the preciousness of the titular harbour (‘Swirlaround’, which features nice electric guitar stylings from Steve Rangaele, and ‘Surge’ are among the titles), it’s a stirring collection.
