Israels and Clausen are long time friends as well as collaborators and this is reflected in the easeful intimacy of this heartfelt trio recording. Clausen's roots run deep, mixing classical training with a feel for Scandinavian folk tunes; Israels, by contrast, has a fruitier, blues-based style, and he too retains a relish for a rootsy American folk song. But what they most obviously share is a love of Bill Evans, Israels’ most illustrious musical partner. It's Evans’ spirit that shines through the sparse chords of the easy swinging ‘All The Pretty Horses’ or the quiet joys of the title track, which features Brown's clean tones. But it's Israels who constantly catches the ear, 76 years young and still making a jazz noise here, not the least on the hefty, cool blues of ‘Two Degrees East, Three Degrees Left’, which features a sonorous, singing solo from the bass doyen. Timeless.
