Despite more than 60 years passing since his fatal road accident, the flame of Brown's trumpet still burns brightly, as the work of Hubbard, Shaw and countless younger players indirectly demonstrates. There are many brilliant moments in these two reissues, though neither one would be the best place for those wishing to know more. Jazz Immortal was the title given by Pacific Jazz to its pairing of Brownie with then-popular West Coasters (including California native Zoot), the rather fussy arrangements of Clifford's ‘Joy Spring’ and ‘Daahoud’ very much reflecting the fashion of the day. The bonus addition of Brown's Blue Note debut session in a quintet led by Donaldson comes as a chalk-and-cheese contrast, with Lou and Philly Joe making pungent comments on tracks such as ‘Brownie Speaks’. Lush Sounds, on the other hand, is a new title for his famous with-strings album of song standards, this time augmented by seven further un-stringed ballads from the previous 18 months and closing on a glorious ‘Ghost Of A Chance’, done at the first studio date of the new Brown-Roach quintet. If you're already into the trumpeter but unaware of this material, don't hesitate, but if you don't know the Roach albums, then better start there.
