Most histories of the explosion of musical freakdom that took place in Germany in the late 1960s and early 70s focus on the so-called Krautrock of post-psychedelic pioneers such as Can and Faust. But, out on the fringes, dozens of lesser-known bands were dabbling in sounds that approached jazz-rock with the same experimental urge. Contact Trio fit roughly into the same milieu as Munich bands Embryo and Between, taking a jazz-prog template and extending it with elements of free improvisation and contemporary classical as well as ersatz North African and Indian modes. Double Face is crammed with ideas – from sparse, acoustic chamber improv, through rolling double bass and tabla grooves and on to abstract free-bop, with racing bass and drums goading Evert Brettschneider's electric guitar to buzz like a power tool or deal glancing harmonic chords like Derek Bailey bundled into the back of a van by the Baader-Meinhoff gang.
