If House of Legends was the most danceable album Courtney Pine has ever produced, this successor to it is the most reflective and beautiful. There's a reverence for the songs, but at the same time, a sense of daring, so that even ‘A Child Is Born’ moves from a sensitively stated theme to some aggressively exploratory playing from Rahman, ushering in a spiky torrent of contrastingly phrased notes from Pine before the two of them relax back into the melody. Some vintage record effects on the top of ‘Come Sunday’ don't quite work, but when the actual performance arrives it's another mix of the sensuous and the questing. One of the star turns is a heartfelt version of Brian McKnight's ‘One Last Cry’, where Pine's bass clarinet tone is every bit as distinctive as McKnight's soul-drenched voice on the original. But the absolute highlights of the album are ‘Amazing Grace’ exploring the extremes of the bass clarinet's range within a performance of exceptional control, and the extended ‘A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square’. In it, Pine manages to find a captivatingly sumptuous tone in the instrument's middle range, that's matched by Rahman's delicate, thoughtful accompaniment. Masterly.
