One of Britain’s finest New Orleans-style musicians, trumpeter Cuff Billett is well-known for his recordings with Barry Martyn, Bill Greenow and Butch Thompson, not to mention with such visiting American stars as George Lewis.
Yet, despite being acknowledged for years as the finest revivalist group in the South of the UK, his New Europa Jazz Band has never released a full album. This 30-year-old recording from a festival in Somerset finally puts that right.
One joy of Cuff’s repertoire is that he draws his material from far and wide, so alongside standards such as ‘I Can’t Get Started’, there’s plenty of lesser-known fare, such as Papa Celestin’s ‘Sweetheart of T-K-O’, or Andy Anderson’s ‘Chant of the Tuxedos’. There are some fine solos, notably from pianist John Clarke, and clarinetist Loz Garfield, while John Wiseman gets the chance to shine on Wingy Manone’s ‘Tailgate Ramble’.
But the star throughout is Cuff himself, soloing inventively, and always setting the right tempos for the tunes to develop. Sadly the one example here of his charismatic singing is under-recorded, which has always been a major feature of his live gigs, but that’s a minor quibble among a good cross section of this much-admired band’s work.
