A French-based chamber trio led by Das Kapital - saxophonist Daniel Erdmann and featuring ex-London based LOOP Collective vibraphonist Jim Hart and strings player Theo Ceccaldi join forces for their second album release on the classy Hungarian indie label BMC. Erdmann's compositions are built on a foundation of looping acoustic riffs and ostinatos occasionally imagining how krautrock might have sounded if performed by an acoustic jazz ensemble. It's a strongly atmospheric brew in which texture is the special ingredient. Erdmann is a thoroughly engaging expressive saxophonist with a breathy old-school tone and a playfully inventive idiomatic vocabulary that draws from hot R&B and ‘spiritual’ jazz through to Warne Marsh, a yearning post-Garbarek cool and more angular, free forms. There's generously versatile support and astute soloing from both Hart and Ceccaldi, who's often called on for a guitar-like sound, and it's enhanced by superior production values.
