A youngish, Israeli-born saxist/educator based in Los Angeles, Rotem has already made several of his own albums, and co-led a two-saxophone quartet with Josh Johnson on Fresh Sound. This new live release appears to be his bid for wider recognition, given the choice of repertoire. To be fair, the approach to some of these seven Coltrane numbers is determinedly unconventional with, for instance, the opening ‘Moment’s Notice’ played as an out-of-tempo ballad with a bit of reharmonisation too, while ‘Syeeda’s Song Flute’ is disguised rhythmically. It’s good to see that the title-track (one of my favourite Trane tunes) and ‘Naima’ are both played more straight, in terms of similarity to the original. On these and especially on ‘Dahomey Dance’ and ‘Song Of The Underground Railroad’, there’s some expansively lyrical piano from Billy Childs, while the last-named track also has a highly melodic bass solo from Polish-born Oles(zkiewicz). One item seems to be also available as a video from this performance at a club called The Bluewhale which, unlike the music, sank during the pandemic.
