This is an excellent new release by pianist Danny Grissett, who makes the move from the Criss Cross label to Savant. His choice of musicians here is interesting. Archer embraces straightahead and Glasper-type hip hop groups. Saxophonist Stephens, best known for his low-key ballad playing (though also highly respected on baritone, his original instrument), blows with greater strength than usual, while Bill Stewart gets top marks from just about everyone. The material is also quite varied. After a striking whirlwind treatment of Gillespie's ‘Woody’n You', with edge-of-the-seat solos all round, things settle down. Ellington's ‘Prelude to a Kiss’ gets a waltz treatment, but Monk's ‘Gallop's Gallop' stays fairly faithful to the composer's conception (with Bill Stewart's solos particularly impressive). The rest are all Grissett originals in very varied vein, with ‘Renating’ outstanding. That leaves a seldom-heard Herbie Hancock ‘Just Enough’ (along with ‘Renating’ arguably the album's best track) and the outgoing ‘Detour Ahead’. Grissett impresses more and more on every record. He's fast becoming one of my favourites. Don't let this one fall between the cracks!
