Collectively written, this may well come across as contemporary classical music. However, essentially it's an introspective improv approach by this Norwegian/French band on their second outing for ECM. It would fetch up well in a chamber music venue, or eclectic jazz club at a push, but audiences would have to concentrate, though. Percussion-based in essence, the chief fascination is how the writing enables Wallumrød to find any improvising space at all as harmonic development is not really an issue here. Whether he does is a moot point although he achieves some distinction by long harmonium washes and a spatial approach. Too ponderous at times, the Dans les arbres attitude is not really about thinking out loud; it's more involved with quiet and very abstract contemplation but lacks a certain momentum.
