The recent release of Atlantic box-set John Coltrane Mono was a significant response to the many listeners who now feel the early attempts at stereophonic sound were often clumsy, presenting a diffuse audio image that lacked clear focus. They argue instead that monophonic sound had, by the time early stereophonic sound emerged, reached a kind of perfection, first by the sound engineers of electrically recorded masters for the 78rpm shellac medium, and later, in the early 1950s, for the 45rpm and 33rpm medium on vinyl. Certainly, the mono aural image offers greater impact and often is a better reflection of the music's visceral appeal. Here Time Out– one of the most popular jazz albums of all time that included the best selling ‘Take Five’ and ‘Blue Rondo a la Turk’ – comes in both stereo and mono versions. For those new to the debate it presents an opportunity to form an opinion about the merits and de-merits of argument. This is a well-packaged 2CD product in limited edition format and comes with the original liner notes. The bonus tracks are the complete Time Further Out and Countdown – Time In Outer Space albums, thus completing the trilogy of Brubeck's time signature experiments (Time In of course, was devoted to time signatures then considered orthodox in jazz, like 4/4) and these bonus albums also come with their original liner notes.
