Some of the brightest young sparks to have come out of jazz classes at the Royal Academy in recent years join drummer Dave Hamblett for his debut recording. Hailing from the Derby area but now living in London, Hamblett was awarded a Yamaha Scholarship during that period and graduated in 2010. Last year he appeared on highly-thought-of pianist Ivo Neame's Yatra album, and Neame returns the favour here as the youthful veteran of Hamblett's sextet of three years. The drummer writes memorable, well above average, warm dreamy folk-like themes for a double horn front line that sit somewhere between the ensemble post-bop of the Dave Holland group and Seb Rochford's Polar Bear. Hamblett sets up well-crafted structures with counter-themes deftly supporting solos, of which those of the impressive twin tenors of Josh Arcoleo and Joe Wright stick out most. The drummer plays a supportive but fluid role, and newcomer Alex Munk adds some quirky colour to the ensemble texture with chiming guitar effects. Light at Night is a title that kind of sums up the sparkly yet pretty chilled-out vibe of this young leader's recording, and there's no shortage of raw talent involved.
