Dave Storey’s trio returns for a third album on the heels of 2019’s successful Bosco, comprising a set of recordings made in a single day. Alongside a reading of ‘Body And Soul’, there’s five compositions by James Allsop: we can hear the influence of Coltrane in the modal solemnity of ‘Gemelli’ and the declamatory swing of ‘Magnum’ (named for the PI or the ice cream, one wonders?), but the saxophonist is very much his own man, with a robust tone and impeccable sense of time that can drive the latin-flavoured ‘Joe’ and also accommodate the delicate melodicism of ‘Rain Song’, where he’s ably supported by Conor Chaplin’s wide intervals which suggest an entire architecture of harmony.
‘Body And Soul’ is a real tour de force by the band that emphasises their well-developed group interplay alongside all their individual strengths: Allsopp’s clear tone, sophisticated melodic sense and fluid delivery, Chaplin’s beautifully imaginative, flawlessly executed basslines and Storey’s sensitive, intensely musical touch. This is a deeply satisfying collection from three young musicians at the top of their game, unafraid to work within the tradition while infusing it with their own distinct personalities.
