Royal Academy of Music graduate David Beebee is a busy man: among other things, he plays an assortment of instruments (piano, keyboards, cello, bass guitar, double bass), composes music for films, tours with Palestinian singer Reem Kelani, and runs his own studio and label in East Sussex. Happily he also has time to write and record his own music. He has assembled an impressive collection of musicians to work with: drummer Eric Ford has played with the likes of Partikel, double bassist Jakub Cywinski has performed with various big-name orchestras, while saxophonist Julian Nicholas was invited to join Loose Tubes when he was just 23.
This quartet recording gives all four musicians plenty of time in the spotlight. Beebee and Nicholas spar and complement one another across the 11 tracks, with the texture and detail provided by the rhythm section constantly foregrounded too: there's a lovely bowed solo from Cywinski on ‘X Marks the Spot’, while Ford features prominently on the urgent, driving ‘Model T. An engaging, intimate set.
