The young Cuban singer Daymé Arocena has been causing ripples for a while now, what with her rich voice, charismatic presence and knack for not just fronting a band, but leading one. Sure, her compositional skills might need a bit of developing, particularly lyrically, but a background in classical music and choir directing, immersion in the chants and song repertoires of the Afro-Cuban Santeria religion – fragments of which she often injects as scats – and a love of jazz and neo-soul have already made her a force to be reckoned with. A British/Cuban band featuring the likes of producer/percussionist Simbad and – most impressively – award-winning pianist Robert Mitchell, arguably the album's secret weapon, combine a range of influences including jazz and the call-and-response stylings of African music. Massed backing vocals lift the glorious title track, with its insistent, hypnotic percussion and organ and Spanish-language lyrics heralding a new era in Cuban music – and indirectly, given recent events, a new era for Cuba.
