These four ‘name’ musicians in the jazz firmament are linked by the proximity of their postcodes, since, as John Scofield puts it in the liner notes, “All of us have built our careers in [New York] city and then moved out to the Hudson Valley to raise our kids and have a home.” And who can blame them. An area of spectacular natural beauty just a two-hour car drive from Manhattan Island, the area is now home to more artists per capita than any area of the States – including New York City. The group first came together in 2014 to play the Woodstock Jazz Festival, their musical paths having criss-crossed at several points in the past – DeJohnette and Scofield's association dating back four decades, including their co-led Trio Beyond and as members of Herbie Hancock's New Standards ensemble. Scofield toured and recorded with John Medeski as an honorary member of Medeski Martin & Wood, and Larry Grenadier has played with all three in different musical contexts. And this year they all toured together as part of DeJohnette's 75th birthday celebrations. The point here is this band is not a hastily put-together ‘supergroup’ for a record session, after which everyone goes their separate ways. They have history together and it shows – nothing is forced or flashy, they seem to be playing more for one another than any audience. Taking a jazz-rock inspired path, they mix original pieces with ‘Lay Lady Lay’ and ‘A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall’ by Bob Dylan, ‘Wait Until Tomorrow’ by Jimi Hendrix, ‘Up on Cripple Creek’ by The Band and ‘Woodstock’ by Joni Mitchell. It all hangs together very well – relaxed yet intense, it might not possess the cutting-edge fervour of their youth, but there's much distilled musical wisdom to savour.
