Recorded during two days at Staccato Studios, Stavanger, Norway in 1982 (the first part being released as Backwards And Forwards by Impetus Records), this release completes the session between legendary UK drummer and improviser John Stevens, Norwegian sax player Frode Gjerstad and South African double-bassist Johnny Dyani. Coming together as Detail, the trio were somewhat overlooked at the time because, as Gjerstad reflects in his sleevenote here, “[it] was too much jazz for the free music people and it was too far out for jazz people.” Today Detail's sound is less of a threat, coming across as a totally enjoyable experience with Gjerstad's thoughtful and energetic sax playing pitched in-between Stevens and Dyani's perfectly paced drum and bass explorations. Throughout there are no free jazz collisions, and the mood remains pleasantly passive as the players move around each other like carp in a pond. The guiding hand of Stevens, however, is hard to ignore and it is his presence (particularly at the end of the set) that lifts the session from being just another free jazz workout into something that shines.
