A previous collection in Avid's series covered Gordon's sadly brief surfacing in 1955 and the start of his more permanent Resurgence (the LP title from 1960), all recorded in Los Angeles. Now in 1961-62 he's in the New York area, before taking off for Ronnie Scott's and spending a decade and a half in Europe. To the Gordon aficionado, it's probably sufficient to mention the albums Doin' Allright (sic), Dexter Calling, Go and A Swingin' Affair, for it to be understood that this is top-drawer stuff – and all of it included here, except for the one bonus track on an earlier reissue of the second session. For others, it's worth pointing out that these four dates, in quartet format apart from adding the young Hubbard to the first session, superbly demonstrate how the Lester Young and Charlie Parker elements of Gordon's style cohere at their best, whether on soulful ballads or laid-back uptempos. The rhythm-sections and the Rudy Van Gelder-originated recording are excellent too.
