The inimitable Dianne Reeves is back with her first studio album for five years. Featuring an all-star cast, the overall tenor of the 12-track album is set by the wondrous cover of Marvin Gaye's ‘I Want You’. Touchingly, the characteristically liquid synth line in the marble smooth ‘Feels So Good (Lifted)’ is provided by Reeves’ cousin, the late George Duke. Featuring Robert Glasper as arranger and performer, the sudden harmonic shift at the chorus of Fleetwood Mac's ‘Dreams’ takes the breath away. Penned by album producer Terri Lyne Carrington, ‘Satiated (Been Waiting)’ is already a classic sounding duet with singer of the moment, Gregory Porter. Brazilian guitar maestro Romero Lubambo offers a reinvention of ‘Waiting In Vain’, while a cover of Ani DiFranco's eloquent ‘32 Flavors’ (part of the singer's live set) packs a huge emotional payload. Written especially for Reeves, Esperanza Spalding's ‘Wild Rose’ possesses that light, dancing, almost otherworldly quality, which Spalding can seemingly tap into at will. And when it's sung by Dianne Reeves, life simply is more beautiful.
