The great Argentinean composer and bandoneon player Dino Saluzzi has been releasing on ECM since 1982, latterly framing his fluid, melancholic musings within a band that includes his brother Felix, son José Maria and nephew Matias on saxes, guitars and electric and acoustic basses.

But on this lovely personal recording it's just him and his country's concertina, with which Saluzzi likes to venture away from the sinewy confines of tango and orquesta tipica into territories free, new and spiritually uplifting. There's a restorative vibe to the inner landscape expressed throughout Albores' nine original tracks. It's a vista that embraces ancestral links (at 85, Saluzzi is mindful of his place in the canon) while pushing at possibilities and sometimes drawing literary parallels. Según me cuenta la vida – Milonga' is a paean to both Jorge Luis Borges and the tango clubs of Argentina. Two tunes – ‘La Cruz del Sur’ and ‘Don Caye – Variaciones sobre obra de Cayetano Saluzzi’ – take their cue from José Hernández' epic poem The Gaucho Martin Fierro. ‘You'll save yourself trouble if your name/Stands well with your fellow men’ is quoted in the liner notes. Saluzzi's career has already ensured as much. But this profound album, all diverse timbres, gliding rhythms and tumbling melodies, further underscores his legacy.
