Unlike say Miles, Dizzy didn't feel the need to reinvent himself, for in cahoots with Bird, Bud, Klook and Monk he’d already been there, done that and in the process helped to create modern jazz. Now in his late sixties Dizzy's many small group recordings for Pablo could be erratic whereas he was in his element on those now rare occasions when he fronted a big band. Economically, a small touring unit like this was at best serviceable. But could be more interesting when in the winter of 1974, Dizzy toured this very same line-up around Europe but with Sonny Still replacing Mike Longo. Now back to Ronnie's, where being the only horn brought its own pressures. But whereas many elder statesmen often slip into selfparody, Dizzy had more self-worth with his chops still in good shape as was his wit and his unique ability to entertain an audience. ‘House Full’ notices were posted nightly during this residency. All Dizzy's show stoppers are in evidence including ‘Con Alma’, ‘A Night In Tunisia’, ‘Groovin’ High’ and ‘Manteca’ none of which sound remotely tired. Note: this release comes as four separate volumes at approximately eight sovs a pop, perhaps to have packaged them as a box set would have been a much more customer friendly ploy.
