Three incomplete sets from various North Sea appearances find Dizzy fronting two different big bands, one of them Dutch, in material drawn from his early library. The 1940s versions of ‘Night In Tunisia’, ‘Round Midnight’ and his 12/8 arrangement of ‘Lover Come Back To Me’ are mixed with 1950s staples such as ‘Jessica's Day’ and ‘Doodlin”, the most recent piece being Lalo Schifrin's ‘Blues’ from Gillespiana. Between these slightly lacklustre performances are two small-group numbers, only one of them with Milt and Moody. Presumably, this is the only material to have been televised and preserved, all of it rather undermined by those awful 1980s bass amplifiers and, except for Berroa's work at the kit, not aided by rather leaden drumming. The DVD runs a bit longer than the 76-minute CD of the same music, by adding Dizzy's announcements and the 1988 handover of the festival's ‘Bird Award’, presented by an uncredited (and almost unseen) Mike Hennessey. Somehow, the DVD seems more compelling than the mere music, perhaps because the visual presence of Gillespie focusses attention on the logic of his playing, fluffed notes and all.
