The front cover could have been stolen from a Santana record and the liner notes reference Amazonian shamans, but Icaros is, more or less, an album of piano trio jazz. Marshall himself, an award-winning young pianist who has studied in Leeds and Amsterdam, has a parallel career as a beatmaker, and there are shades of J Dilla here that call to mind Robert Glasper. Elsewhere, Marshall and his Amsterdam scene bandmates sound more like a less cheeky Neil Cowley or, occasionally, a less heavy EST. It's well played and well judged, the feel both live and lively. There are reflective moments, occasionally featuring delicate bowing from Nijboer. But on the whole, it's more of a workout for Latvian drummer Kurdeko: music of momentum. All that remains is to find out what the shamanic elders of the Amazonian rainforest make of it.
