Let the good times roll! Again. There's been some awful tat released under Dr John's name since his passing over Jordan, but here's a release to truly savour.
No alt-pop, no psychedelia, no cod voodoo, this is the man and his piano doing his N’Awlins thing. The tone is set by the opening two cuts. Just Mac Rebennack Jr. at the keys, notably roogalating through ‘Professor Longhair Boogie’ with that steady rolling left hand and pistol totin’ right. And the whole 14-cut shebang climaxes again with a solo piano piece, ‘Good Night Irene’. Emotionally dedicated to Rebennack's (and everyone else's) New Orleans hero, James Booker, it roils and boils splendidly, a two-fisted shout of joy. Between these solo bookends, various bands back Rebennack across the years, turning even ‘Love for Sale’ into a hip jiving hop, augmented by some throaty sax. Of course, Rebennack can take it down: ‘Rain’ is a soulful ballad. But it's the fiery band that gets us up and dancin’, notably when Trombone Shorty blows hard on ‘Big Chief’. Through the good Professor, ‘King’ James Booker, the primal Dr and on to the likes of Jon Batiste, the spirit lives on.
