Here's a hugely enjoyable snapshot of a fertile period in the history of the Instant Composers Pool when leading Dutch improvisers were reaching out and forging connections with artists from around the world, capturing ICP stalwarts Han Bennink and Misha Mengelberg at play with South African saxophonist and lynchpin of The Blue Notes, Dudu Pukwana. Mengelberg's piano and Pukwana's alto enjoy a palpable rapport throughout: dig how, on ‘The King Of Weasle Is Called Easle’, Mengelberg's melodramatic pounding slips suddenly into reflective ripples, instantly eliciting soulful sax with a smoky rasp. Bennink avoids the drums entirely on the same tune, instead contributing blustery trombone while, on ‘Yi Yole’, he scratches up scrabbling violin and high, ghostly clarinet tones. ‘Silopopbock’ – originally the whole of side B of the LP – is more conventional (if such a word can be applied to these wilful mavericks), with Bennink crashing dangerously around the kit, Mengelberg stirring-up tight scribbles and stabbing chords and Pukwana veering from high screams and frantic calls to slippery blues phrasing. It's bags of fun.
