Like the Crims in the days of Muir and Bruford, Aarset’s massive compositions profit from Holte and Dahlen’s contrasting percussions, a rainforest rich cacophony that allows Aarset to emphasise guitaristic colourings, textures and a breadth of palette that is at times overwhelming. Indeed, the whole project is rather studio bound, with any number of layerings filling every available space; there’s even brass and vocal interjections just when you thought the mille feuilles momentum couldn’t be topped. For Brits, the panorama summons everyone from Pink Floyd to Cinematic Orchestra, while the Rothko-esque artwork chimes with a certain Scandanavian gloom. But don’t forget this is the guy who plays along with Andy Sheppard and beneath it all rings a sense of melody that redeems (just) the project.
