This haunting, evocative album largely derives from music written for motion pictures by the late filmaker Theo Angelopoulos and theatre productions by Antonis Antypas, by pianist Eleni Karaindrou. There is a strong emotional undercurrent to this music, as if voicing the unspoken thoughts of a character or the unseen implications of a situation portrayed on stage or screen. Even without seeing the visual correlation on screen or on stage, Karaindrou's writing – to paraphrase Aaron Copland – undoubtedly has the power to make potent through music a film or theatre production's dramatic and emotional value. Here, in a 2010 concert in Athens Concert Hall, is a mix of freestanding themes by Karaindrou, music inspired by the novel Number Ten by M. Karagatsis, and music from the Antypas' theatre productions Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The Glass Menagerie and Death of a Salesman and Angelopoulos' films Ulysses' Gaze, Beekeeper, Dust of Time, Eternity and a Day, Landscape in the Mist and, depending on whether you go by to the record company's notes accompanying this release, Journey to Cythera; or the album liner notes, Voyage to Cythera. Appearing on the ECM New Series imprint, this is not jazz per se, but an internal strand that lingers beneath the surface, emerging at the hands of saxophonist Jan Garbarek. Garbarek's tone on ‘Requiem for Willy Loman’ is nothing short of miraculous, and his expressivity to draw rich meaning from the music is echoed on ‘Invocation’ and ‘Adagio for Saxophone’. Yet, although he is featured on several other compositions, along with the viola player Kim Kashkashian and oboist Vangelis Christopoulos, it is Karaindrou's memorable compositions that remain in the memory. It may not be jazz but it is memorable.
