London has long had a bubbling Latin jazz scene. Cuban music, especially, is flourishing, as evidenced by the plethora of ensembles playing everything from rooftop bars to festivals such as La Linea, the Latin music shindig curated by promoters Como No!. What the capital and the rest of the UK still lacks, however, is a mainstream embracing of Cuban music, whose players are steeped in the idioms of jazz, and whose repertoire is often as fierce, funky and accessible as it is complex and breath-taking.

Here to change all that is pianist, composer, arranger and bandleader Eliane Correa, a 30- something who, with her 14-piece timba-fusion orchestra La Revolución and guests including Cuban female rap duo La Reyna y La Real and sonero Mandi Miranda has turned out one of the albums of the year. With lyrics empowering women while also speaking to the power of faith, the joys of sensuality, Correa leads her large format mixed gender band like the protagonist of her tune ‘La Reina’. Electric guitars and synths halo around horns, keys, drums and driving Cuban percussion; elements of soul, funk, rock and jazz nod to Hancock, Havana and the melting pot that is London. Utterly maravilloso.
