What a turn-up for the books this is! A concert at the Teatro Cristallo in Milan that captured four now legendary names from the British jazz scene at the peak of their powers in 1979. It's a concert that seems like a proverbial snowball descending downhill, gathering momentum while growing in stature. The sheer energy and creativity from these musicians can be felt across the decades; it's exciting, at times seat of the pants stuff, pulled off with confidence and creativity.
The coiled spring energy of these performances might be explained by liner note writer Riccardo Bergerone when he says the Teatro Cristalla concert was sold out and with a capacity of 1,000 seats, “They weren’t used to such large audiences” – especially the standing ovation at the end.
Suitably inspired, they collectively played out of their skins, the contrasting approaches of the lyrical Dean and the explosive Tippett perfectly judged, underpinned by the rhythmic energy with which the two South Africans Miller and Moholo brought to British jazz – it's all captured here.
