The German drummer Eric Schaefer has come up with the goods here on his quartet The Shredz’ first recording for the Munich label ACT. It's pitched somewhere in the well-mined soundworld of other trumpet-led post-electric Miles bands such as those of Erik Truffaz (at his previous best), Nils Petter Molvsr, the global-beats Swedish maestro Goran Kajfes and the American Christian Scott, as well as displaying something of the jam band vibe of Medeski, Martin & Wood. Although it's a recording exploding with a raw psych-jazz vibe and spacey electronic soundscaping, Schaefer's classical sensibilities also come to the fore (check his ACT debut in 2013 when he celebrated the 200th anniversary of Wagner's birth) on his composition ‘Barber’, a nod to the American composer's work, with a symphonic element and nu-jazz rock ambience blending remarkably well. Schaefer's cutting-edge, upfront contemporary feel behind the kit bears some similarities to the brilliant New York drummer Mark Guiliana's spontaneously-improvised reinterpretations of digital electronica and hip hop alongside Brad Mehldau in Mehliana. Schaefer's contribution, above all else, adds to a crackling, edge-of-the seat experience.
