However you dress it up, three horns blasting out over the changes of two generic originals and three John Coltrane warhorses will always sound more like an impromptu jam than a well-rehearsed band. Which is OK, as long as there are special moments and light and shade, or spur-of the moment riffs urging each soloist to greater heights. Or even a ballad feature for a contrast. Unfortunately this gig got stuck in a rut. The opening ‘V's Groove’ is an expanded modal blues, ‘Dana’ has more substantial changes, and ‘Lonnie's Lament’ starts dramatically. But all three settle on a medium-tempo lope. ‘Impressions’ opens with a bass solo and picks up speed, but ‘Chasin' the Train’ returns to form before ending with a collective shout. And once the themes are played, nicely harmonised as the Melling originals are, there are only solos in between. Alan Skidmore is his reliable fiery self, but Gerd Dudek is run of the mill and Jiri Stivin's flute is suspect and sometimes sounds positively twee. Maybe a momento, but nothing more.
